Again playing with the technique from Day #16, this time I used the preface to Book I of William Carlos Williams’ Paterson as my source to “read through” with my father’s name. Williams came to mind since my father and both his parents were from Bergen County, New Jersey, and my father was born in the hospital where Williams was the longtime Chief of Pediatrics, under his tenure. I assume it’s unlikely that any of my family actually ever crossed paths with the poet, but it’s very possible and partly because of the Bergen County connection (as a place it looms large in my childhood imagination – quite different an atmosphere than the cheap suburban Jersey Shore where I grew up) I’ve long been interested in Williams. Paterson seems to be a promising source text, so I think I’ll continue with this tomorrow.
